On 28th August 2011, 400 new first graders and their families from the city of Raanana enjoyed a wide variety of interactive activities in the city's main park. The event was co-sponsored by Merchavim in the framework of our early childhood program - "Let's Play on Sesame Street" - in partnership with Israel's Ministry of Education, Hop! children's television channel and Sesame Street.
The event was made possible due to generous funding from the Fohs Foundation and the U.S. Department of State which is currently supporting the expansion of our early childhood activities over the coming two years.
The American Ambassador to Israel, Mr. Daniel Shapiro and the Mayor of Raanana were also in attendance.
Merchavim produced flyers which we distributed during the event. The flyers - samples from the educational resources available in Hebrew and Arabic through Merchavim's "Let's Play on Sesame Street" program - highlighted the ethos of the program: to teach our children to listen to "others" and respect the diversity of Israeli society.
The program's DVD, which we also distributed, contains short segments encouraging family engagement with the values of program.
Merchavim "webinar" for early-childhood program facilitators led by guest lecturer - director of Municipal Psychological Services in Nazareth - was dedicated to the impact of the home-school connection on children's development, attitudes and behaviours.
British Foreign and Commonwealth Office hosted a reception for British Friends of Merchavim and "Kulanana" - UK Study Tour.
